ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Be Prepared is State Line Abortion Access Partners’ program which provides those living in Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee and Western North Carolina region:
- free emergency contraception (EC), often known by the brand name Plan B
- Opill, the first over-the-counter daily birth control pill and back-up kits
What Is Opill?
Opill is an over-the-counter progestin-only birth control pill (sometimes called the “mini-pill”). It’s safe, effective, and available to anyone who can get pregnant.
How Well Does Opill Work?
- With perfect use — taking it every day at the same time — Opill is 98% effective.
- With typical use (when people forget or take pills late), it’s about 91% effective.
- Opill is safe and effective for most people, including teenagers.
Because Opill’s hormone lasts only 24 hours, timing really matters. Taking it at the same time every day is the key to strong protection.
How to Take Opill
Consistency is key — here’s your simple daily routine:
- Take 1 pill every day at the same time.
- The hormone level lasts 24 hours, so keeping a routine is important.
- When you finish a 28-day pack, start the next pack the very next day.
If You Miss a Dose
Life happens. Here's what to do if you're more than 3 hours late:
- Take the pill as soon as you remember.
- Use condoms or another backup method for the next 48 hours.
- We include condoms and pregnancy tests in your backup kit to make this easier.
Medication Interactions
Some medicines — especially those used for migraines or seizures — can make Opill less effective. If you’re not sure whether your medications interact, ask a pharmacist or healthcare provider.
